Sailors' Valentines
Introduction
In creating this journal, I aimed to capture both the beauty of Sailors' Valentines and their ties to colonial history. These shell artworks, crafted by local artisans in 19th century Caribbean colonies like Barbados, were made for European sailors as keepsakes.
Through this fictional narrative, I explore how local women and artisans, working within the colonial system, transformed shells into intricate designs for global trade. Each page reflects the delicate craftsmanship and the deeper connection to colonial economics and life.
